If you build it; they will come. The park has come a long way since a group of Port residents sat around a table in September 2008 and talked about a place for all community members to enjoy. A committee was formed and monthly meetings have taken place virtually every month since that very first discussion. We are very fortunate to have such a strong, caring and committed group to represent the community in building the park. Each one of us comes with our own set of skills, strengths, experience, expertise and opinions (there always opinions!). The committee includes: Lewis Benedict (he’s the man!), Wayne Blenkhorn, Laura Churchill Duke, Ann Greener, David Hovell, Scott McCulloch, Leigh Morrison, Councilor Janet Newton, Wendy Zwicker and myself, Lia Glover Hennigar. In 16 months we fundraised like mad (I think we had about 12), stayed on top of the media and ahead of our goals, and I believe Laura found and applied for every grant possible which was instrumental in helping us reach and bypass our Phase I goal of, $80K for play. We have seen wonderful things happen in this community all park-related. Local children showcasing their incredible talent at the very first fundraiser (Showcase #2 is this April 25th so don’t miss it), watched as more than 100 people packed the Port Pub last September and raised $20,000 in a matter of HOURS, and witnessed a group of men (most whose children are long grown) build one amazing (and complicated) play structure during the coldest week of December. Perhaps one of the greatest moments for me personally was to see my boys playing alongside a dozen others while parents and grandparents stood talking one sunny afternoon. I noticed that people were coming to the park on foot, bike and by car. And that is what we envisioned from the get-go. A centrally-located park for all to enjoy. To the community who stands behind us we want to say, thank you. We now enter Phase II, of the park build so stick around…. there’s more to come! We are grateful for your support, encouragement, volunteerism and commitment to make a wonderful place to live, even better. Lia Glover Hennigar Chair
